Media Release: Church seminar aiming to further promote Christian-Muslim relations

A SEMINAR discussing multiculturalism in Scotland, Islamic faith and Muslims has been organised by the Church of Scotland and the Programme for Christian Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA).

Says a spokesperson: “PROCMURA is the oldest pioneer interfaith organisation in Africa with a specific focus on Christians’ relations with Muslims. Founded in 1959, PROCMURA is dedicated to promote within the churches of Africa, faithful witness to the Gospel in an interfaith environment of Christians and Muslims, as well as constructive engagement with Muslims for peace and co-existence.

“The event brings an opportunity to understand more about religious relations in Scotland.”

Speaking ahead of the seminar, the Very Rev Dr Andrew McLellan, convener of the World Mission Council of the Church of Scotland, said: “It is and exciting opportunity for Scotland to host this event.

“Not only will it give us a chance to learn at first hand of the engagement between Muslims and Christians, which are so important for the peace and safety of so many in Africa, it will also give us in Scotland, who often struggle with the very same relationships, the gift of being able to learn from the experience and wisdom of Africans.”

Hosted by the World Mission Council at the Church of Scotland’s offices in George Street on Friday 28th January, the seminar will be addressed by keynote speaker, Professor Malory Nye, chair in Multiculturalism and Principal of the Al-Maktoum Institute in Dundee.

An expert in multiculturalism, Islam and Muslims in the UK and Europe, cultural and religious diversity, Minority Religious Groups in Britain and Anthropology, Professor Nye is the author of academic books and articles.

He has also edited the international journal, ‘Culture & Religion’, for a number of years as well as the ‘Scottish Journal of Religious Studies’.
