Media Release: Core attracts £600k of business in first year

ABERDEEN-based Core Structures attracted £600,000 of businesses in 2010, which was regarded as its first real year of trading, and is on course to double that amount in 2011.

Says a spokesperson: “The company designs, supplies and installs fully-integrated building solutions using glulam-engineered structures and advanced floor, wall and roof panel systems, which are becoming increasingly sought-after for public buildings, churches, leisure centres, health centres, supermarkets  and even in some special domestic situations.”

Managing director, Hamish Morrison, said: “It will be disappointing for Core if we don’t double last year’s turnover, as we hope to pass the £600,000 mark by April.”

Core doubled the number of employees in 2010 and is in the process of recruiting again to cope with all the interest in its services.

Morrison added: “Although the actual glulam is sourced from our European partners, we are now generating work for many other UK businesses, such as metalwork fabricators, installation teams, joinery manufacturers and a series of other complimentary services.

“It is of course our long-term aim to manufacture as much as we can locally and bring as much of the European expertise back to the UK as possible.”

Glulam can generally be incorporated wherever steel is used.

“We have a big job ahead of us, trying to convert designers away from steel to glulam and other timber products,” he said.

“We want to work with design teams to design in glulam at the conceptual stage, not to convert to it once the designs are complete.

“I suppose the UK traditional thinking is to use steel, but Glulam is more than just a viable alternative, with considerable advantages over steel in terms of its warm, welcoming appearance; and, of course, the fact that it has no carbon footprint.”
