Media Release: Looking for romance this spring? Try hostelling

FRIENDSHIP and romance was a hot topic at this weekend’s TNT Travel Show in London.

SYHA Hostelling Scotland joined forces with Hostelling International and many other European Youth Hostel Associations including Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, to chat to gap year travellers living in London.

Gap year travellers, mainly from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and USA, came to the TNT show to plan their travels while in Europe. Hostels were the most popular choice of accommodation with Scotland high on the destination wish list.

Hostelling Scotland’s marketing manager, Lynne Macglagan, was on hand to help them make the most of what Scotland has to offer. “When I asked people why they love hostelling so much, the top answer was ‘because of the people you meet’.”

The most common comment was that ‘staying in a hostel offers more opportunity to socialise than staying in a hotel or B&B’ and is the reason that hostels are the accommodation option of choice for those wising to meet interesting and engaging people or perhaps find new travel buddies for the next adventure.

This would appear to be true for most hostellers as at the Scottish Caravan and Outdoors Show in February SYHA Hostelling Scotland talked with many people who had met their husband or wife while on a hostel holiday.

“Romances can easily blossom in the social and friendly atmosphere of a Youth Hostel.

“One hosteller attending the show had met his wife in 1941 during a stay at SYHA Hostelling Scotland’s former Inverbeg Youth Hostel. The couple also went back there for their honeymoon,” added Lynne.

Many of the people that Hostelling Scotland’s team met at the TNT Travel Show loved the multi-share rooms and told stories about new friends they had made during their travels staying in hostels.

Others admitted that they are beginning to opt for private hostel rooms (in particular families and couples), but agreed that the kitchens and social areas mean that you can still make new friends and enjoy sharing experiences during your stay.

Hostelling offers a comfortable and affordable accommodation option, the convenience of self-catering with well equipped kitchens or a range of catering options in simply stunning locations. But, by far, most travellers tell Hostelling Scotland that is the social element they love most of all.

So whether you prefer a private room or don’t mind sharing there is the perfect hostel for you somewhere in Scotland. Visit www.hostellingscotland.com to find your new favourite.
