Media Release: Harris Tweed Orb 100th anniversary commemorated with Model T Ford, ascent of Ben Nevis

A 1919 Ford Model T car is to be reupholstered in Harris Tweed to celebrate the dual centenary of the iconic Orb and the Ben Nevis event.

Harris Tweed is the world’s only commercially-produced hand-woven tweed. The Harris Tweed Authority (HTA) has donated the famous cloth to Ramsay Coachtrimmers, who are reupholstering the Model T Ford to mark the celebrations of the joint 100th anniversary.

The Harris Tweed cloth will be on display in Mr Ramsay’s reupholstered Model T (exhibitor no.69), as part of the cavalcade of Model T Cars in Fort William on Saturday 21st May.

To celebrate the centenary, it is hoped the Model T Ford will endure a 4,406-foot challenge to the summit of Ben Nevis.

The challenge will echo Henry Alexander’s record breaking drive to Britain’s highest peak. To commemorate Henry Alexander’s achievement in 1911, the plans are for the Model T Ford to be dismantled into rucksacks and carried up to the mountain peak, where the parts will be reassembled at the top.

The HTA is delighted to be part of the Model T Ford’s epic challenge and it is a fitting celebration for the iconic Scottish brand.

Lorna Macaulay, HTA chief executive said, “We are thrilled to be celebrating our 100th anniversary in collaboration with the Model T and as with Ford, we celebrate style, quality and good taste, whether in fashion or cars.

“The Ben Nevis challenge is very exciting and we are proud to be part of this achievement, marking our celebrations at one of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes.”
