Media Release: Preview of tenth anniversary of Baxters Loch Ness Marathon

TEN runners who have completed the previous nine years of the UK’s most scenic marathon expect to be celebrating at the finish line of the tenth anniversary Baxters Loch Ness Marathon on Sunday (2 October 2011).

The ten runners will be available for a photo opportunity on Saturday 1 October – see below for details.

The ten anniversary runners will join others from 45 countries travelling to Inverness to take part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running in Inverness’ Bught Park.

One of the tenth anniversary runners, Erica Christie (Bellahouston), was second in the inaugural event and continues to feature in the top rankings with a tenth place in 2010.

All Festival events on Sunday finish in a spectacular location in the Bught Park, beside the River Ness and close to the city centre.

Here, supporters, families and friends are invited to enjoy the superb programme of entertainment on offer in the Event Village between 10am and 4pm.

Live music by popular bands Hoodja will keep your toes tapping throughout the day. Taste and purchase delicious food from Highland producers at the Baxters Food & Drink Fayre.

Visit ‘Baxters Kitchen’ and watch Baxters chef, Darren Sivewright, as he demonstrates some of the appetising condiments range in action.

Look out for samples fresh out of the pan and don’t forget to bring your purse so you can take some home for tea!

Other highlights include venison burgers, crofters pies, seafood paella, hog roast, handmade pizzas, soup and filled baked tatties – something to revive runners or warm up supporters!

There’ll also be cakes and buns, fresh fruit, snacks and even hand-made chocolates.

Highland producers represented at the Fayre include:

  • La Tortilla Asesina
  • MacLeod Organics
  • Woodburns Espresso Pizza
  • Highland Hog Roasts
  • Well Hung Lamb Company
  • Olive Tree Chocolate
  • Fiddler’s Bar

New entertainment featured in the Event Village this year includes:

  • Super Jumpers, a thrilling experience where, safely harnessed, visitors can jump to heights in excess of 8m.
  • Big Air (reverse bungee jump)
  • WOW balls – inflatable balls which, once safely inside, allow visitors to walk on water!

The entertainment programme also includes a climbing wall with various levels to challenge all ages, bouncy castles, face painting, and a sports expo with sales of specialist sports clothing, as well as charity stands ensuring runners and companions are kept amused throughout the day.

Entry to the Event Village is free.

Pre-school age children have their own event in the Wee Nessie on Sunday morning, which they can run, walk or toddle to the finish with an accompanying adult.

A limited number of entries to the Baxters River Ness 5K Fun Run will be available at the weekend on a first come, first served basis.

The 5K Fun Run is open to people of all ages and abilities including wheelchair entrants, and follows a scenic course through the centre of the Highland capital.

In this year of Active Scotland, the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running on Sunday 2 October 2011 is a great opportunity for everyone to take part in a running event.
