Media Release: Iain is rewarded for lifetime achievement in journalism

A BBC Scotland journalist is to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Highlands and Islands Media Awards next month.

The winner of the Barron Trophy, which recognises a lifetime achievement in journalism in the Highlands and Islands, is Iain MacDonald, the well-known reporter with the BBC.

Iain (62) will receive the trophy from Scottish Cabinet Minister Richard Lochhead at the annual Highlands and Islands Press Ball being held at the Newton Hotel, Nairn, on Friday 3 February.

Iain began his career in journalism in 1970 with the DC Thomson Group in Aberdeen.

Three years later, he moved to the Highlands, where he worked with the Highland News as sports editor and the Football Times as editor.

His career with the BBC began in 1977 and he has served in Glasgow and Westminster, but mainly in the Highlands and islands over the past 35 years.

Iain was nominated by Craig Swan, news editor of the BBC in Inverness, on behalf of BBC colleagues.

Craig said: “Iain captures a story, conveys a mood, and unpicks the intricacies of Highland and Island life with humour, sometimes outrage and always with great objectivity and insight. But most of all he can write and write beautifully.”

Gordon Fyfe, chair of the Highland and Islands Media Awards, added: “Iain is a very worthy winner of this prestigious award in recognition of 40 years of dedicated service to readers, listeners and viewers in bringing them the biggest and best stories from the Highlands and Islands.”
