Media Release: Scotland welcomes Fairtrade farmers for two-week event

FAIRTRADE farmers from several developing countries are arriving in Scotland, as Monday 27th February marks the beginning of a fortnight of events that celebrates all things Fair Trade.

A two-week programme, co-ordinated by The Scottish Fair Trade Forum, will be launched at the STUC in Glasgow, supported by the Glasgow Fairtrade Co-operative, Equal Exchange and Shared Interest, inviting members of the public to sample some Fairtrade products and gather more information.

Ugandan coffee producer, Jennipher Wettaka, will make a guest appearance for the launch, which will also showcase some original short films about Fair Trade made by City of Glasgow college students.

The evening will then be followed by a Scottish Fair Trade Benefit Night at the Stand Comedy Club.

A host of other producers from Uganda, Malawi, Nicaragua, Ghana, Palestine, Kenya and India will also be welcomed by schools, communities and shops over the next fortnight, to discuss Fairtrade products such as chocolate, coffee, cotton and olive oil.

Director of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, Martin Rhodes, says: “I’m absolutely delighted at the number of producers who have agreed to come to Scotland and help us with Fairtrade Fortnight as Scotland moves ever closer to being declared a Fair Trade Nation this year.”

Up to 72 events will take place across Scotland, from Elgin to Lanark.
