Media Release: Run for fun – and Red Cross funds

THE British Red Cross is looking for energetic people prepared to go that extra mile – or 26.

The humanitarian organisation wants to recruit fundraising runners to take part in the 2012 Edinburgh Marathon in May.

But if the full distance seems a bit too much, there’s always the half-marathon or, for teams of four, the Hairy Haggis Relay.

The Red Cross hopes to recruit around 30 runners to raise funds to help the organisation carry out its lifesaving work at home and abroad.

Laura Thomson, Red Cross senior community fundraiser, said: “The Edinburgh Marathon is an internationally famous event which attracts runners from all over Scotland and much further afield. It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages who enjoy the marathon day atmosphere to raise cash for the Red Cross while they enjoy themselves. It puts the fun into fundraising.

“Sponsored runners can raise a lot of money for the Red Cross and, by doing so help thousands of vulnerable people right here in Scotland, elsewhere in the UK and abroad. Every penny raised for us will be carefully spent to save lives and change lives.”

Runners who sign up to run for the Red Cross in any of the three races on Sunday 27 May will receive a welcome pack, a Red Cross t-shirt to wear during the race and motivational support.

Entry will be free for Red Cross runners taking part in the full marathon who secure £500 sponsorship, £300 for the half-marathon or £500 total for a team of four taking part in the Hairy Haggis Relay.

Laura Thomson added: “We want to raise as much money as possible and hope to have around 30 runners taking part on our behalf. If you’re taking part in any of the races, why not raise funds for a really good cause at the same time?”

The marathon and other races will start at London Road and Regent Road, Holyrood, at 9.50am on Sunday 27 May.

Anyone interested in running for the Red Cross should contact Laura Thomson by phone on 0131 338 5700 or email LThomson@redcross.org.uk by 5pm on Tuesday 17 April.
