AN Aberdeen-headquartered charity is appealing for local people to help it restock its food cupboards with essential items.
Says a spokesperson: “Aberdeen Cyrenians distributes around 1,300 food parcels annually and through its Street Alternative service, provides 5,500 meals a year to those rough sleeping in the city as well as those living in temporary accommodation with no cooking facilities.
“Street Alternatives is a complementary project which is run wholly by volunteers and provides service users with access to a decent meal, temporary respite, a shower and a laundry service four days a week.
“As part of the organisation’s Information, Advice and Support service, service users can drop in and request a food parcel. Each food parcel provides three meals a day and is designed to last two to three days and with limited cooking facilities in mind.
“However, food stock levels at the Aberdeen Cyrenians Summer Street base have diminished in recent weeks and the charity is seeking members of the public to help them by donating non-perishable food items.”
Scott Baxter, Aberdeen Cyrenians depute chief executive, said the charity relies on the generosity of the public in situations like these.
He said: “Providing hot meals for those who are sleeping rough in the city is an extremely important part of what Aberdeen Cyrenians does.
“It sounds so simple, but even the most basic of foods can go a long way to helping us being able to offer this service, which so many people in Aberdeen benefit from.
“Unfortunately, every so often our supplies begin to go down quicker than donations come in, so we would like to urge anyone who can spare anything to please do so, as we really are hugely grateful for every food donation we receive.”
Anyone who would like to make a donation to the charity, should contact Kimberley Wilson for more information, or simply drop off any items at the charity’s base at 62 Summer Street.
Aberdeen Cyrenians was established in 1968.
In the last 40 years, the range of services offered by the charity has grown considerably.
Originally just providing food and shelter, the services now aim to meet all the varying needs of people affected by homelessness in Aberdeen and the surrounding area.
