Media Release: Aberdeen Cyrenians opens its doors to the public

ABERDEEN-headquartered charity, Aberdeen Cyrenians, is hosting an open day to give people a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes at the charity on a daily basis.

The charity, which supports individuals who are experiencing homelessness, will welcome people to its Summer Street base in Aberdeen on Saturday (June, 02) from 9.30am.

During the open event, people will have a chance to tour the charity’s facilities which include catering and washing facilities as well as counselling and advice services.

The charity also provides around 5,500 meals a year to those rough sleeping in the city as well as 1,300 food parcels annually through its Street Alternative Service.

Staff and volunteers will be on hand to give an insight into the current demands the charity, which deals with homelessness throughout Aberdeen City and the surrounding area, currently faces.

Scott Baxter, Aberdeen Cyrenians depute chief executive, believes the day will give people a valuable insight as to how donations of all kinds are used by the charity.

He said: “It is extremely important to us that we give our supporters and potential supporters the chance to come to our Summer Street base to see the essential support our dedicated team provide on a daily basis.

“Many people do not fully understand the extent of the problem of homelessness, especially during times when we are told the North-east is bucking national trends.

“Without the help and support provided by charities like Aberdeen Cyrenians many people can find it extremely difficult to find their way out of the trap of homelessness and the other factors it brings with it.

“We hope that by inviting people into our centre we can not only thank people for their continued support but also encourage others to support us in any way they can.”

Aberdeen Cyrenians was established in 1968.

In the last 40 years, the range of services offered by the charity has grown considerably. Originally just providing food and shelter, the services now aim to meet all the varying needs of people affected by homelessness in Aberdeen and the surrounding area.
