Media Release: RGU student takes top prize in property competition

Women In Property Student Awards 2011

A ROBERT Gordon University student has scooped an important prize in a national property industry competition, the Association of Women in Property (WiP) National Student Awards.

Pamela Robertson, studying Architectural Technology has been named as the leading Northern Scotland property student. Pamela goes forward to the national final which takes place in London on 27th September.

Catherine Thornhill, chair of WiP’s Northern Scotland Branch and Associate at Ryden, said: “The awards process is tough. Before they even reach the judging panel these students are nominated by their universities for their outstanding abilities.

“We ask them to compete against each other, demonstrating their aptitude for their profession to a panel of judges for a place in the national final.

“Judging between the best female built-environment degree students from across the region was tough. Pamela has done exceptionally well to get this far. The creativity, design flair, knowledge and understanding of her brief she demonstrated was exceptional and she will undoubtedly be a one to watch.”

Pamela Robertson, who belongs to Glasgow, wins £300, an opportunity for work experience, free membership of the Association upon graduating and the opportunity to participate in the WiP mentoring programme whereby a mentor will support her in her early career.

She said: “I’m completely amazed and delighted to be given this award. I realise I’m up against some other very talented girls so I’m particularly proud that the judges put their vote with me.

“These awards are important because there is still an imbalance in terms of the low numbers of women in the property and construction industry, so we need to raise awareness to the career options out there.”

The National Student Awards are now in their fifth year. Open to female, third year students studying a Built Environment degree course, students are nominated by their Universities, hence only the very best get to this stage.

The National Student Awards are this year sponsored nationally by construction firm, Byrne Group, and international property advisers, Jones Lang La Salle.
