THE new owners of the former Oddbins wine merchants at 449 Great Western Road in Glasgow recently launched a competition to find a name for the brand new wine merchant company – with a case of champagne the prize for the lucky winner.

And now the prize-winning name can be revealed as ‘Quel Vin’, French for ‘which wine’.

The owners of the new nameless wine merchant are the Giovanazzi family, owners of next door La Parmigiana, considered the longest-established Italian restaurant in Glasgow that remains under the ownership of the family that founded it, and they are delighted with the quirky new name for their latest venture.

Mark Billington, managing director of the Giovanazzi group of companies, said: “The family was keen to retain a local, independent identity to this attractive corner of Great Western Road that borders the banks of the River Kelvin.

“The winning entry came from Fiona Lang for ‘Quel Vin’, which seemed an obvious name in retrospect. After all, what else could a wine merchant on the banks of the River Kelvin be called

“Congratulations to Fiona and I hope she enjoys her crate of champagne!”

Prizewinner, Fiona Lang, said: “I always think of Great Western Road as a street of shops with clever names – there was a wholefood shop in the 1980s that got me noticing them – so I’m delighted that Quel Vin will be keeping up this tradition!”

Quel Vin will be run along similar lines to Oddbins. Indeed, the new owners will be retaining all Oddbins’ staff and will continue to stock a comprehensive selection of quality wines from around the world.

Having recently resumed ownership of The Big Blue Bar and Restaurant, the Giovanazzi family also runs next door Philadelphia fish and chip shop.
