Dutch-owned hotel group chooses Glasgow as first home for SocietyM – for ‘people on the move’ – ahead of London and New York openings

A REVOLUTIONARY business club concept to reflect ‘a new way of working in the future’ has been introduced exclusively in Glasgow – ahead of later openings in London and New York.

citizenM has chosen Glasgow as the first home for its new SocietyM business club, designed specifically for people on the move and with a view to offices becoming obsolete in the future.

The Amsterdam-based hotel group has established the new concept as a first business club of its kind with its members – business nomads – buying into its flexibility, connectivity, space and style.

Situated on the street level of Renfrew Street’s citizenM hotel, SocietyM will provide 100 founding ‘citizens’ (members) with unique creative spaces where they can relax, work and hold meetings, presentations and events.

Among the facilities are a club room, large 50-capacity screening room and six smaller creative rooms while there is 84 sq m of chalk and whiteboard walls, all set among stunning Vitra furniture and vintage accessories – such as 40 typewriters – sourced from around the world.

Each founding citizen has his or her own personalised letter and storage locker among other booking benefits while individual and group memberships are also available.

citizenM brand director, Robin Chadha, explains the concept: “SocietyM is an initiative from citizenM hotels created for a new type of worker: those who aren’t bound by offices or office conventions, wanderers doing business wherever the connectivity’s good and the coffee fresh. We call these folk, business nomads. We’re delighted to introduce it as a world exclusive in Glasgow.

“Essentially, this is the way of working in the future, with more people on the move and offices becoming obsolete. We’ve chosen Glasgow as our first space for this and will then take SocietyM to London and New York.”

SocietyM offers business nomads spacious meeting rooms, each fully-equipped with audiovisual equipment, wipe-clean walls for notes, theories and scribbles, and a Nespresso machine.

There’s also a screening room for up to 50 people, a relaxing lounge area, bookshelves full of inspiration, and free WIFI. And, of course, with citizenM hotel just upstairs, members can rest up before another day of world-changing idea-making.

The styling behind SocietyM is old ways of working meets new contemporary design.

There are:

  • Over 650 sq metres of floor space
  • 84 sq metres of chalk/ white board walls
  • 40 typewriters, 60 cameras and 25 phones from vintage collectors shops around the world
  • Andreas Stalker artwork in the club room and Vitra furniture throughout
  • Flight-style food and drink trolleys plus Nespresso machines in every room
  • Six creative rooms for up to 12 people, large screening room for 50 and club room for events

Amanda Rennie, manager of SocietyM, added: “SocietyM was created by citizenM hotels, and shares its sister brand’s ideals. Like citizenM, SocietyM is an enterprise based on fulfilling the needs of a new group of people – business nomads.

“We felt we had created the ultimate business club for our citizens and that has been backed up by the large numbers who have signed up already.

“It’s nice to know that citizenM has chosen Glasgow for the first SocietyM – especially when you think that London and New York are next in line.”
