THE challenges facing the retail sector are well-documented, but a trio of recent deals secured in the space of a fortnight – leaving a shopping centre in the southside of Glasgow fully let –  suggests that The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns is successfully bucking the prevailing national trend.

The three new retailers at The Avenue are: homeware and gift store About Living; Arran Aromatics, the independent Scottish manufacturer of fine fragrance and toiletries, and The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, the retailer of quality, fashionable clothing at value prices.

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “I’m delighted to welcome our three new tenants to The Avenue and am certain that our shoppers will be grateful for the expanded retail offering they bring to the local community.

“The fact that this trio of deals means that The Avenue is now fully let suggests that, despite what the doom-mongers might profess, there exist pockets of activity where the retail sector remains very buoyant.

“Newton Mearns is one such area and our offering to shoppers of an alternative to sprawling trolley-dash shopping culture with a comprehensive range of outlets offering a warm and welcoming shopping experience conveniently located on the outskirts of Glasgow city centre is evidently proving attractive.”

The Avenue is home to 44 different retailers including: banks/post office; books; children; clothing/fashion; food and drink; health and pharmacy; jewellery and gifts; mobile phones; newsagent and cards; opticians; perfumery/beauty salon; restaurant and coffee; shoe and repairs; handbags/ luggage and travel.

It is open until 7pm every Thursday with 1,000 free car parking spaces (including underground) seven days a week.

Says a spokesperson: “The Avenue is managed by BTWShiells, the commercial property consultancy ranked number four in the Trevor Wood Associates Going Shopping 2011.

“Other Scottish centres managed by BTWShiells are the Forge Shopping Centre in Glasgow and The Regent Shopping Centre in Hamilton, both of which have also recently attracted a number of new lettings to expand their customer offers.”
