HRH The Princess Royal Appointed as First Chancellor of the University of the Highlands and Islands

The University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland’s newest university, has appointed HRH The Princess Royal as its first ever Chancellor.

The Chancellor is the titular head of the University and The Princess Royal’s role will be both ceremonial and ambassadorial, participating in conferring degrees at graduations as well representing the University in the UK and overseas.

“We are delighted The Princess Royal has accepted our invitation to be our first ever Chancellor,” said James Fraser, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Highlands and Islands. “We welcome her to the university. The Princess Royal has been a longtime supporter and has already visited many of our campuses. She joins us as we seek to develop a university which will have a transformational effect on the Highlands and Islands and attract national and international interest.”

Professor Matthew MacIver, Chair of the University court added: “This is a great honour for the Highlands and Islands and I’m certain that the patronage of The Princess Royal will be a tremendous boon to all involved in the creation of our new University.”

A date for the formal installation of the new Chancellor is expected to be set for 2012.

The University of the Highlands and Islands covers the region, including Moray and Perthshire, in a partnership of 13 partner colleges and research institutions, and a network of over fifty outreach learning centres.

The University gained full university status in February 2011, evolving from UHI Millennium Institute, which was a higher education institution

There are currently 8156 students studying on undergraduate and postgraduate courses or undertaking postgraduate research with the University.

Is e an Seansailear as ceannard don Oilthigh ann an ainm agus bidh dleastanasan aig a’ Bhana-phrionnsa a bhios an dà chuid deas-ghnàthach agus tosgaireach, agus i a’ gabhail pàirt ann a bhith a’ toirt seachad cheumannan an àm ceumnachaidh cho math ri bhith a’ riochdachadh an Oilthigh san Rìoghachd Aonaichte agus thall thairis.

Tha a’ Bhana-phrionnsa Rìoghail taiceil dhuinn o chionn ùine mhòr agus thadhail i cheana air mòran de na h-àrainnean againn.  Tha i a’ tighinn còmhla rinn an àm dhuinn a bhith a’ feuchainn ri oilthigh a chruthachadh aig am bi buaidh chruth-atharrachail air a’ Ghàidhealtachd is na h-Eileanan agus a tharraingeas ùidh dhaoine aig an ìre nàiseanta agus eadarnàiseanta.”

Thuirt an t-Àrd-Ollamh Mata MacÌomhair, Cathraiche chùirt an Oilthigh, cuideachd: “Is e urram mòr a tha seo don Ghàidhealtachd is na h-Eileanan agus tha mi cinnteach gum bi taic na Bana-phrionnsa Rìoghail na buannachd mhòr do gach uile duine aig a bheil làmh ann a bhith a’ cruthachadh an Oilthigh ùir againn.”
