FOUR hundred aspiring entrepreneurs from across Scotland have registered to attend the first national event for young people in Scotland – Making it Happen Conference, which is to be held on Wednesday (23rd November) at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Students, school pupils and young people from as far north as Keith and Peterhead and as far south as Dunfermline and Perth are set to attend the event to hear from some of Scotland’s top entrepreneurs – including Ryan Longmuir who, after a difficult battle with drugs, started his own catering company aged just 23.

He will share his story about how he overcame personal obstacles and went on to celebrate national success through his business, winning several awards for his high quality catering service.

Organised by Enterprise North East Trust the event aims to encourage young people to consider entrepreneurship as a rewarding career path.

Gary McEwan, chief executive of Enterprise, says: “With the recent announcement that one in four young people in Scotland are unemployed, we’re aiming to highlight that entrepreneurship can provide a different career path, that you don’t have to rely on getting a job, but instead you can take control and be the one who creates the job.

“This is the first event of its kind to be held in Scotland and it’s great to see so many young people attending ‘Making it Happen’.

“Our aim is to encourage people to think about how they can use their skills and knowledge to start their own business and I’m confident that our speakers’ experiences will have a lasting impression on the attendees and give them plenty of food for thought.”

Also speaking at the conference will be BrightSolid CEO Chris van der Kuyl will also be sharing his experiences as an entrepreneur.

After setting his company up from the humble beginnings of his bedroom, he has gone on to become one of the UK’s leading Internet pioneers.

There will also be an exhibition space where attendees can meet with representatives of PSYBT, Enterprise North East Trust, Business Gateway, Young Enterprise, Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce and others.

The ‘Making it Happen’ 2011 conference will take place from 9am – 5pm on the 23rd November.
