A NEW survey conducted in the US has shed some light on the real reasons that many people use social media and networking sites.

The study, which was conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, questioned over 2,250 Americans in order to discover why they signed up for a social networking site, such as Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn or Twitter, and what exactly they use it for, with the vast majority of the respondents going against popular belief and stating that they used social networking for keeping in touch with their friends.

Christopher Liversidge, QueryClick’s managing director, comments: “One of the many myths about social media is that people only use it to find new friends, new partners, or even just to find out more about a celebrity. But this study proves that this is absolutely not true, with 91 per cent of those surveyed saying that they used social networking sites to keep in touch with current friends, with a further 87 per cent admitting they used it to keep in touch with family members.”

Other reasons that the people surveyed attributed to their use of social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, was to connect with old friends that they’d lost touch with at 86 per cent, while three per cent of respondents said they used social networking to find potential dates, and five per cent saying that the ability to follow a celebrity online was the reason they joined a social platform.

Chris continues: “This survey has actually been very eye opening for everyone involved in the online industry, from professionals in social media, to people who work in SEO, because it gives us a rather fascinating insight into what drives people to use social networking. While this survey was obviously conducted in the US, it still gives us a really good idea of social media trends all over the world, which can only be a very positive indicators for the future of the industry.”
