THE rest of the country may have been dreading the day that winter takes its icy grip, but Glen Tanar Estate in the Cairngorms National Park has been the celebrating the season’s first flurries of snow.

Unprecedented snowfalls in the last two years have led to thousands of winter sports enthusiasts heading to Scotland to experience conditions that rival major European resorts.

With the country’s top ski centres on its doorstep – and miles of breathtaking woodland trails on the estate – Glen Tanar could not be better placed to cater for the annual invasion of winter visitors.

Glen Tanar has already seen a significant dump of the ‘white stuff’, and if the forecasters have got it right this season looks set to be another bumper year for Scotland’s ski resorts.

Claire Bruce of Glen Tanar Estate says that many guests at their luxury, self-catering cottages have been very surprised at the quality and volume of the snow in recent years.

She adds: “There is a perception that Scottish ski resorts do not offer the same kind of experience or snow as those on the continent or the United States.

“However, our guests tell us that the conditions at the ski centres near Glen Tanar in the last couple of years have been every bit as good as overseas and sometimes even better.

“The resorts here are something of an undiscovered treasure, but if we continue to experience winters like we have see of late where the snow has kept on falling and stayed for so long – last year, we still had skiing in May – things are definitely going to change.

“We are very close to the ski centres at Cairngorm, the Lecht and Glenshee, but some of our guests find that they don’t even have to leave the estate to enjoy winter sports. The network of way-marked trails on the estate is regularly used for cross-country skiing and for sledging, so it is a real winter playground.

“However, some of our guests just want to come to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the estate in winter, doing nothing more energetic than lazing by the log fire.”

The self-catering cottages at Glen Tanar have been awarded a four-star rating by VisitScotland and the estate is also a holder of a silver Green Tourism award.

The seven properties are completely individual and range from a traditional granite cottage to a Norwegian log cabin.

All have modern amenities, including wi-fi, DVD players and satellite television and if all guests want to do after a day on the slopes is enjoy some après-ski, in-house catering service Liz’s Larder can provide a range of homemade oven-ready meals.

Set in the heart of Royal Deeside and in the Cairngorms National Park, the Glen Tanar Estate offers a wealth of activity for visitors including walks, cycling, riding and trout and salmon fishing.

The Glen Tanar Estate Ballroom is available for functions from weddings to conferences.
