TV and radio presenter and producer, Heather Suttie, bumped into pupils from Belmont House School in Newton Mearns singing Christmas carols in a fundraising charity exercise in The Avenue Shopping Centre last week and quickly recruited their fundraising efforts for The Kind Heart Africa School.

Heather, in her role as voluntary project manager for The Kind Heart Africa School for children aged 3-17 in Chanika, Tanzania, is seeking stories and poems for the school to use in storytelling sessions.

And following their meeting at The Avenue, 3-18 year-old pupils at Belmont School have agreed to provide written material for their counterparts at The Kind Heart Africa School.

Heather said: “Kind Heart Africa is a school for 100 orphans and vulnerable street children that aims to empower them by providing education and vocational training to make them useful members of society.

“It is desperate for reading materials and the stories and poems from Belmont House School will make a tremendous difference to the vulnerable children of Tanzania’s education – written by children their own age, but living in a different world.”

The Kind Heart Africa School is aimed at serving the children of Dar es Salaam and the neighbouring regions of Tanzania. All the vulnerable children residing in Tanzania are expected to benefit from this initiative.

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “The Avenue is supporting Heather’s fundraising efforts for The Kind Heart Africa School and is appealing for local children to help.

“We’d welcome written material from anyone who can spare the time to put pen to paper. There’s no limit to the length of material required – 20 words to 2,000 words or more are welcome – and the subject matter is entirely open, so both fictional and factual material pieces will be used in the classroom.”

Send written material to Centre Management Suite, The Avenue Shopping Centre, 250 Ayr Road, Newton Mearns, Glasgow G77 6AA. For further information about The Avenue log onto www.avenueshopping.co.uk.
