BRUICHLADDICH, the independent Islay distiller, has added a merchant banker and an astrophysicist to its commercial team – to help develop sales, worldwide.

David Ferguson and Craig Johnstone have joined Bruichladdich’s young team as business development managers.

David, 30, whose family are from Islay, is a chartered accountant by trade having returned to Scotland after seven years working with Deutsche Bank in London and New York.

Craig, 26, from Macmerry, East Lothian, qualified as an astrophysicist, before deciding that ‘another celestial body;, whisky, was more interesting than rocket science.

He started as a tour guide with Glenkinchie, before being the Edrington Group’s brand ambassador in Western Canada and then in Edinburgh for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

Says a spokesperson: “They join an invigorated Bruichladdich commercial team under Douglas Taylor that enjoyed a record year in 2011 with sales growing by 20 per cent – helped by the launch of the Botanist Gin and the Laddie 10.”

Bruichladdich’s managing director, Mark Reynier, says:  “We are very pleased to welcome Craig and David to our small team. We are in a very exciting place at the moment, with our new website, our own-distilled spirits being so well received, and with Octomore and Port Charlotte coming of age this year.

“These accomplished lads will be a great help in reaching our exciting goals for 2012 and beyond and we all look forward to working with them.”
