THE director of one of Scotland’s leading courier firms has relived fond memories of his school days, making a generous donation to his former primary school, as part of corporate commitment to the local community.

Jerry Stewart, of Eagle Couriers, who was a pupil at Townhead Primary over 55 years ago, presented the Coatbridge-based school with a cheque for £100 to cover transport and ticket costs for a series of educational trips.

The donation comes after the courier boss reached out last year and covered the costs of a trip for 25 Primary Two pupils to attend a special workshop at Summerlee museum. The £100 will now allow two classes to attend further workshops at the museum as part of their learning curriculum.

Jerry said: “It’s great that I am able to continue supporting Townhead, as I have fond memories of being there when I was younger. Returning to the school over 50 years later brought back some happy childhood memories.

“Townhead is a fantastic school which is always looking for innovative ways to deliver its education remit and enhance learning for the pupils, which is why we are delighted to be able to support them further in this.

“A recent trip to Summerlee museum inspired me to make the original donation. It impressed me with the level of education it offers to all of its visitors and I really wanted to give a local school the opportunity to experience this for themselves – and who better than my former school!

“Hopefully, the children will find the museum just as exciting as I did and will enjoy learning about their home town and how their grandparents and great grandparents used to live, work and travel.”

Mrs Shona Williams, from Townhead School, said: “We are extremely grateful to Jerry and the team at Eagle Couriers for their generous donation of £100 to our school funds.

“The money donated will be used to subsidise two of our classes to visit Summerlee Heritage museum where they will be able to participate in workshops, which will help in enhancing the children’s learning.”

Eagle Couriers recently made a donation to Summerlee museum and their project to regenerate the old Monkland’s Canal area and are hoping to continue working with the museum, supporting them on a variety of similar projects.
