THE President of the Royal College of Nursing, Andrea Spyropoulos, will present the first annual Stirling Health Lecture in Logie lecture theatre at the University on Wednesday 28 March at 4pm.

Ms Spyropoulos will speak about Values in Nursing: Myth or Reality? covering contemporary nursing topics including education, the care of older people, image and professional issues.

The Stirling Health Lecture is a new annual event which will focus on topics central to modern health and healthcare. The Lectures will address matters key to health policy and present an opportunity for staff, students and guests to hear from national and international speakers devoted to making a difference to people’s lives.

Professor William Lauder, head of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, says: “Andrea Spyropoulos is an inspirational figure whose career has been a mixture of leadership and clinical work, making a difference to the lives of people at all levels.

“This is an important time, when we are looking at reviews of nursing which are currently taking place in England and in Scotland. It is also a time of concern about the reform of the NHS for England. This lecture will consider contemporary issues such as the care of older people and the image that nursing presents.”

Andrea Spyropoulos, RCN president, said: “I am delighted to be delivering the first ever Stirling Health Lecture. High quality healthcare is my passion, and at a time when NHS budgets across the UK are under growing pressure, it is more important than ever that the patient is at the heart of all decisions about the future of healthcare. There is no doubt that we are in the midst of an extremely challenging time and I will be using this lecture to talk about how nursing values are critically important to the provision of healthcare both now and in the future.”

The Stirling Health Lecture is free and a limited number of places are available for members of the public. Those wishing to attend should book a place in advance by contacting Lynne Black on 01786 466 345 or at l.m.black@stir.ac.uk
