AN innovative piece of underwater technology has just completed its first trials in the North Atlantic.

Ecosse Subsea Systems’ wholly owned subsea trenching system SCAR 1 has just ploughed a 20-metre wide, one kilometre stretch of seabed to the West of Shetland to remove boulders prior to umbilical and pipelay work.

Following the initial call, the Ecosse Subsea Systems team was able to design modifications to SCAR 1 to meet the demands of the rough terrain job in just four days and fabrication work was completed in ten days, ensuring that the equipment provided a robust service in a very short timescale.

Commenting on the project, Ecosse Subsea Systems’ founder and managing director, Mike Wilson, said: “Key to the success of these trials was the ability to provide a robust, reliable service in a very short time by listening to and working with our client.

“SCAR 1 has been adapted to meet the needs of this job and the adaptation has been created in such a way that it can be transformed and used as a backfill plough or for subsea boulder clearing.

“That means the equipment will have huge potential for single-mobilisation multi work scopes as SCAR will be able to perform seabed preparation, trenching and backfill.”
