AS part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival, pop up venue The Rio Club, will be jazzing up Merchant Square in Merchant City, the heart of Glasgow’s cultural, fashion and food quarter, for three nights from Friday 29th June.

Popping up downstairs from the corner entrance at Candleriggs and Bell Street, The Rio Club’s 3am license will enable groovers to get down long into the warm summer nights.

The James Taylor Quartet sets the weekend off in style with its rare-groove funk headlining on Friday 29th June from 8pm with support from Federation of the Disco Pimp and actor and radio DJ Craig Charles (Funk and Soul show), perhaps best known for playing Dave Lister in the British cult-favourite science fiction sitcom Red Dwarf and Lloyd Mullaney in the long-running soap opera, Coronation Street.

The following night sees Ray Harris & The Fusion Experience headline with support from DJ Maestro (Holland) and Glasgow Blue Note Trip from 9pm and, from 8pm on Sunday 1st July, The Rio Stand Up rounds off the weekend with a selection of Scotland’s hippest and funniest comedians with performances from Des Clarke, Gary Little, John Ross, Raymond Mearns and jazz singer Ian Shaw, who will be reprising his sell-out Jazz Festival Show with his stand-up comedy performance, which he is taking to the Edinburgh Festival after touring with Rory Bremner.

Tickets, priced £15 for Friday 29th June and £10 for Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July, are available from The Rio Café and Tickets Scotland.

The Merchant Square is Glasgow’s most vibrant venue for a worldwide selection of cafes, bars and restaurants, including: Arisaig; Bar Square; Beer Café; Boudoir Wine Bar; The Chophouse Brasserie; Fanelli’s; Mercado and Metropolitan.

Located on Candleriggs, Merchant Square, once part of the old Glasgow Fruit Market, is imbued with the history of the area’s dominating Victorian architecture, although today this sense of history blends seamlessly with the distinctly cosmopolitan ambiance that pervades the surrounding cobbled streets that bring the outside in.
