Media Release: Award’s ‘shocker’ for UCFinance boss

A SCOTTISH entrepreneur has admitted that he was “shocked” that his start-up business has won one of the country’s most prestigious awards.

Alfred Gordon, chair of UCFinance, confessed that he felt “stunned” to be awarded ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the Grampian Awards for Business Enterprise 2012 in Aberdeen.

Gordon, who has over 30 years’ experience in building businesses in many sectors ranging from oil and gas, technology, training, accountancy to finance and property, said that the judges must have been impressed with UCFinance’s innovative new business finance model.

He said: “As a new-start business, up against some of Aberdeen’s established, highly-capitalised oil and gas companies, it was a bit of a shocker to win this prestigious award.

“But the real issues, of entrepreneurs tackling, head on, the most topical current political issues of bank finance and lending to small businesses, must have hit home with the assessment panel.”

Gordon revealed that UCFinance is one of four projects he is currently developing to “fill the gap in bank lending” for small businesses.

He explained: “There is a growing need among small businesses for finance, and UCFinance.co.uk starts with those at the bottom of the lending chain, the freelance and contract workers, who are the back bone of many of our industries.”

Gordon, whose businesses have turned over more than £1.5billion, insisted that working with “great people” was the secret to his success.

He added: “UCFinance’s executive director, Joanna Holloway, and the team are now working with many companies and partners to get this much needed finance into the hands of small businesses.”
