Media Release: Product unveiled on Dragon’s Den offers a marriage of convenience

A Marriage of Convenience

THE sugar pink AutoWed machine – which featured on Dragon’s Den on Sunday September 23 and ‘joined together in holy matrimony’ dragons, Deborah Meaden and Peter Jones – has just been installed at Camera Obscura and World of Illusions at the top of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Offering the cheapest and speediest wedding in Scotland, AutoWed, designed by Concept Shed, will join couples, renew vows, or cement best friends forever. Incorporating a specially-composed version of the Wedding March, electronic vows and the chance to escape before being joined for life, AutoWed is the newest exhibit at the quirky and fun venue.

Following their vows, the newlyweds are issued with a two rings and a wedding certificate, which also offers a ten per cent discount on ‘AutoDivorce’, should the relationship turn out not to be a happy one.

Andrew Johnson, director and manager of the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, said: “With weddings becoming increasingly expensive, we spotted a gap in the market for couples to make a quick, inexpensive commitment to each other. We hope AutoWed will witness the beginning of many long-lasting relationships for years to come.

“While the wedding may not stand up in a court of law, it is a very romantic way to end a visit here, and in the first day of operation, it was certainly prompting couples to consider their longer-terms plans together. We are looking forward to hearing about the first couple’s proposal and to welcoming their offspring in the years to come.”

Since relaunching in June 2010 after a £1.2m renovation, the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, one of Edinburgh’s oldest visitor attractions, continues to go from strength to strength.

Rated a five-star, world class visitor attraction by Visit Scotland, it is one of Edinburgh’s most popular days out, with more than a thousand five-star review on TripAdvisor.

Located a few feet from the Castle esplanade, the 177 year-old attraction comprises five floors of interactive exhibits, mind bending illusions and hands-on fun, plus a rooftop terrace and historical camera obscura itself.
