Media Release: Cumbernauld College shortlisted for top industry accolade

A PIONEERING initiative has won Cumbernauld College a place in the final of a prestigious industry competition.

Begins a spokesperson: “The college has been shortlisted in the SQA Star Awards’ Innovation category for its Annual Course Review Tool, an online system which has been utilised across the sector.

“This high-tech system streamlines course information making it easier for staff to extract data for reviews and reports. This ensures that the quality of learning and teaching within the curriculum is of a consistently high standard.

“As a first in the sector, this innovative approach has been praised by a number of agencies including; Education Scotland, JISC and Scotland’s Colleges.

“The online system was further developed in partnership with Motherwell College over the past year, and has now been rolled out to other colleges. West Lothian College and Motherwell College have already installed the system, with other colleges in Scotland currently evaluating the system on a trial basis.”

Cumbernauld College principal, Martin McGuire, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for a SQA Star Award. The recognition from the national awards body is testament to the hard work and innovation of our dedicated staff.

“The Annual Course Review Tool is something that Cumbernauld College is very proud to have established and built on over the last year. Although a small college, time is given to staff to allow them to innovate and this tool is a great example of one of the many new ideas we are using to improve learning and teaching.

“What started out as a college project is now growing to a sector-wide scheme which is fantastic.”

The spokesperson continued: “Prior to development of the online Annual Course Review Tool, analysis of qualifications varied throughout Cumbernauld College with most analysis being discussed by faculties on an individual basis while whole College analysis was limited.

“Cumbernauld College will face stiff competition in the Innovation category when they go head-to-head with Coatbridge College and St Peter the Apostle High School in Clydebank during the sparkling award ceremony being held on November 9 at Anniesland College, Glasgow.”

Hosted by media personality, Kaye Adams, the glittering evening will reward and recognise inspirational achievements and commitment from individuals, schools, colleges and training organisations across Scotland.
