SIX historic Edinburgh pubs, an equally noteworthy Glasgow one (that’s them below), and one big ale Festival.
It’s arguably the city’s biggest celebration of the best of traditional brewing – and the best of a British tradition.
The great pub night out takes on a characterful air. There’s also the big character of writer, presenter, breakfast DJ and acclaimed broadcaster, Danny Wallace, who’s turned master brewer for the occasion, and brewed a beer with Bath Ales, especially and exclusively for this festival.
Wallace’s Walloper? Possibly not, but you might just find it among the 12 extra ales on tap, with the help of a high-tech, custom-made, piece of racking kit, that lets the bigger of the participating pubs offer an unprecedented twelve extra guest ales during the Festival.
As the event gets underway on 22 October, some spookily seasonal Halloween-themed ales will be on tap too, including Hobgoblin, Ghost Ship, and Spooky Moon.
We’re not sure if trying them will turn you into prince… or a frog.
Aficionados will revel in the opportunity to sample ales from around the country, and, for those not versed in the subtleties of the brewers’ art, it’s a fun way to get to know as many as 60 of the huge variety of ales from all over the UK.
“All the participating pubs are in the Nicholsons family of friendly bars and restaurants,” said the Festival’s Billy Duncan.
“The pubs with the specially commissioned racking unit and the extra guest ales will be Edinburgh’s Deacon Brodies Tavern and The Mitre Bar on the Royal Mile, and the Haymarket in the city’s West End, along with Glasgow’s Drum and Monkey.
“They’ll all feature cask ales, hand-pulled up on the bar, for an authentic ‘straight form the barrel’ experience.”
Taking part in Edinburgh are The Conan Doyle, The Mitre, Deacon Brodies Tavern, The Kenilworth, The Haymarket, and Greyfriars Bobby.
The Drum and Monkey in Glasgow is also participating.
The Nicholson’s Ale Festival runs until 18 November.
