Media Release: Coming soon! Glasgow hosts first major gymnastics event since London 2012

TICKETS are now on sale for the Northern European Gymnastics Championships ( 0141 353 8000) and the road to Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 gets a little shorter.

This event will run over two days, October 20 and 21, as Scottish Gymnastics plays host to the Northern European Gymnastics Championships in the Emirates Arena Glasgow.

The stunning new £113 million arena, built for the Commonwealth Games, is set to host the first major gymnastics event  in the UK since the London 2012 Olympics.

The excitement is starting to build for the gymnastics community in Scotland, as Scotshope to replicate the Olympic success of Team GB gymnasts at London 2012.

Scottish Gymnastics president, Lynn Milne, said: “This is a wonderful chance for people from across Scotland, and especially Glasgow and the surrounding areas, to come and see some of the Gymnasts who may go on to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in two years time.

“We are extremely grateful to Glasgow Life for the chance to use the wonderful Emirates Arena for our event.”

Tracy Rea, head of performance at Scottish Gymnastics, said: “This is a great opportunity for our gymnasts to compete against international opponents.

“It is crucial that our gymnasts continue to get such competition exposure as we prepare for Glasgow 2014.

“It is an added bonus that they get to perform at the new Emirates Arena in Glasgow in front of a home crowd and the gymnast’s look forward to performing with distinction.”

Chair of Glasgow Life and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “The Emirates Arena is a world-class facility and its opening reaffirms our position as one of the world’s leading sporting cities.

“We are hugely excited at the prospect of welcoming the world’s top gymnasts to the facility for the forthcoming international events including the Northern European Gymnastics Championships.

“At the same time the venue is open for local community use and we are hoping the facilities will help inspire a new generation of sports stars.

“This Northern European Championships will provide the chance for gymnastics fans in Scotland, and our younger gymnasts – with aspirations beyond 2014 – to come along and see international  high performance gymnasts.”

With the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 and the World Gymnastics Championships Glasgow in 2015 being held in Scotland, Scottish gymnastics are set to experience an even greater interest in the sport in the coming years and the Northern European Gymnastics Championships heralds the beginning of an exciting journey for the sport in Scotland in Scotland.
