Media Release: SIE launches New Ideas Competition to find enterprising student entrepreneurs

Kanika cheque

THE Scottish Institute for Enterprise’s annual New Ideas Competition launches today, offering cash prizes and business support to enterprising students and graduates in Scotland with an idea for a new business.

The New Ideas Competition is designed for ideas at an early stage of development.

The competition has multiple categories and an overall prize of £500 cash and £1,000 of in-kind business support.

Unique to SIE’s approach, anyone entering the competition will receive extra help and support to take their idea to the next level with SIE’s free services, meaning that even if the entrant isn’t an overall winner they’ll leave the competition in a stronger position and can take their idea further.

Previous winners include Kanika Bansal, an Edinburgh University student who developed IV Drip Infusion, a novel method of preventing IV drip infections in hospitals.

Following her New Ideas win earlier this year, Kanika went on to further success with her idea and was recently a runner-up in the Converge Challenge 2012.

The New Ideas Competition is part of a series of Scotland-wide enterprise competitions organised by SIE designed to take students from idea generation to launching a successful new business.

The New Ventures Competition, for more developed business ideas or for student businesses which have already launched, will open for entries in November.

Notes to editor:

The Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE) is the national organisation for promoting and supporting enterprise and entrepreneurship in Scotland’s universities. Its vision is to unlock the potential of all students to drive Scotland’s future prosperity and create rewarding futures.

Since 2005, SIE has helped students from all disciplines in Scotland discover their entrepreneurial talent. The mission of SIE is to encourage and help more Scottish students successfully create and grow new businesses, social enterprises and self-employment opportunities.

Students in all of Scotland’s 19 Higher Education Institutions are supported by SIE’s national network of Interns, Enterprise Champions and Regional Business Advisors. Year on year growth in the numbers of new business ventures and the continual increase in the number of surviving student businesses is a powerful testimony to the continued success of SIE.

SIE’s programme of activities includes regional events, the national Wild Ideas, New Ideas, and New Ventures Competitions and an annual summer Bootcamp; an intensive residential workshop designed to fast-track student ventures from idea to market.

For more information about SIE and its activities, visit the SIE website: www.sie.ac.uk.

SIE is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Scottish Enterprise, and the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council (SFC).
