SEAFOOD Scotland is continuing the highly successful Seafood in Schools programme with an exciting, interactive event at Nairn Academy on the 1st and 2nd November.
Around 250 pupils from the Academy and local primary schools will be attending the event.
The children will enjoy four workshops with their classmates, learning where seafood comes from, how healthy it is, and how it gets from sea to plate.
A selection of fish and shellfish will be available to taste, and pupils will have the opportunity to see fresh and live species including crab, lobster, cod, monkfish and even squid.
Local trout farmer, Craig Ireland, from Delfour Hatchery, and salmon farmer, Gilpin Bradley, from Wester Ross Salmon Fisheries, will take a turn educating children about the life-cycle of these fish, and demonstrate why farmed fish need oxygen, clean water and sustainable feed.
Local chefs from hotels and restaurants around Nairn will also be on hand to demonstrate how to prepare and cook tempting fishy dishes.
A playground workshop, always a favourite with children, is a Trixter bike, which enables them to find out how long it takes to burn off calories consumed in a seafood meal.
Fisheries Secretary, Richard Lochhead, said:
“The Seafood in Schools programme is giving many young people throughout the country the chance to learn about healthy and delicious Scottish seafood, including where it comes from and why it is good for them.
“This event at Nairn Academy is an excellent opportunity for pupils from Nairn and the surrounding area to try different fish and shellfish – in some cases it will be for the first time – and it’s great that local businesses are getting involved.”
Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend a community event on the evening of the first day (1st November: 1700-1900), which will give them an opportunity to enjoy the same workshops and sample seafood delicacies.
In addition to Nairn Academy, primary-six classes will attend from Rosebank, Millbank, Auldearn and Cawdor primary schools.

The event will be held from 9.15-15.30 on the 1st November and from 9.15-12.30 on the 2nd. Each day will comprise three (1st November) and two (2nd November) 1.5 hour sessions during which time, four 20-minute workshops will be held.
