Media Release: North-east family firm creates new business division

Family business

A NORTH-east family business which is continuing to develop and expand is separating its services into three new business divisions to meet growing demand from various sectors.

Mechanical engineering and fabrication firm, H&F Moir, based at Kinellar, Blackburn, is run by Hugh Moir, his son Derek Moir, and son-in-law, Neil Bremner.

The business, founded by Mr Moir Snr in 1976, delivers a range of specialist services to the oil and gas and transport industries focussing on the manufacturing and refurbishment of offshore well service equipment.

During the past 36 years, the business has grown and is now located on a seven-acre site, which houses a 10,000 sq ft workshop and office facilities.

Launching as a blacksmith engineering company, the business developed moving into trailer hire and sales as well as repairs, re-furbishment and fabrication work for oil industry before growing the fleet of haulier trucks, which now form part of North-east firm, Grampian Continental.

As the business continues to develop rapidly in different markets, the family is set to demerge each division to create separate entities to be run by the three directors.

Founding director, Mr Moir snr, is now set to focus on operating H&F Moir Farm, the family’s 75-acre farm estate, near Kintore, which rears Highland cattle and sheep and operates a thriving egg business supplying local shops.

Mr Moir Jnr will continue to manage H&F Moir, the engineering and fabrication element of the business, services large oil and gas firms in the area.

Mr Bremner will take over the trailer and trucks entity under the new name of HFM Transport, while concentrating on his finance director role with North-east road transport firm, Grampian Continental, which is based on a 1.4 acre site at Kinellar.

There are 50 employees over the three companies, previously part of H&F Moir.

Director of H&F Moir Engineering, Derek Moir, said: “The various business sectors at H&F Moir were heading in different directions as the business continued to grow, therefore, we made a family decision to separate the business into the three distinct areas.

“It’s a well-established business and following the decline of the paper mill industries in Aberdeen we began focussing in new areas around five years ago which saw us develop the engineering and fabrication side, as well as the trailer and truck element of the business.”

Customers working with the firm are assured that business will continue as normal following the demerging and rebranding of each division.
