Media Release: ‘Our pies are now so popular we do mail order,’ says proud butcher and fan of World Scotch Pie Championships

Ronnie Murdoch

“WE create a range of meat based pies, pasties and savouries and every year we enter our best products into the World Scotch Pie Championships. Over the years, we have taken home a few medals and we are very proud of each one,” says Graham Murdoch.

“But our ultimate win in 2010 could not have come at a better time for our business.

“In 2008, we opened a new 6500 sq ft factory making some 14 different types of pies, bridies, sausage rolls and much more.

“Our big win in 2010 brought more people into our store and encouraged more people to ‘try a pie’.

“Today, we send our products to our own shop, local stores and supermarkets, farm shops, football clubs and increasingly by courier to all parts of the UK including Cornwall, where some prefer my pie to a pasty; London, well, they need decent food from somewhere. And we even have a regular customer in Oman.

“I would say our win has really helped us reach our potential and to encourage more people to try something new. Nothing works better that an accolade from peers to give people a gentle push to try a pie.”

In addition to Scotch pies and new category, Football Pies, bakers and butchers are invited to enter their best sausage rolls, bridies and speciality savouries.

Entry forms are due in by 19th November and products should be delivered to Carnegie Conference Centre, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline, KY11 8DY between 9.00am and 11.30am on Tuesday 27th November 2012.

Butchers and bakers across Scotland will have the opportunity to become recognised as producing the highest quality savoury products around the globe with awards given to those producing the best products in each category. The winner of the Scotch Pie category will be declared as the WORLD CHAMPION.

The competition, which has run for 14 years, aims to highlight that bakers and butchers create high quality artisan pastry products. Recognising the ‘great and the good’ in this way rewards excellence and raises the bar in the industry.

Alan Stuart, competition founder, said: “The World Scotch Pie Championships truly are a benchmark. We have a huge number of hard working butchers and bakers who deserve recognition for delivering great products day in and day out. I am looking forward to sampling for myself some of the best products on the market today and to seeing who the judges pick out as having produced something that I know will be world-class.”

The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders. Both trade associations actively support and promote bakers and butchers in Scotland by encouraging and sharing best practise.

And this year the competition is sponsored by Bako Northern and Scotland which has been meeting the needs of its food industry customers since 1960.
