Media Release: Businesses in the north of Scotland go ‘green’

A LEADING North-east recycling firm has expanded its specialist food waste collection service in a bid to encourage businesses in the north of Scotland to go ‘green’.

Keenan Recycling, based at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, which transforms food and garden waste into compost, has increased its business into Inverness and the surrounding areas.

Says a spokesperson: “The move will help north companies meet targets set out in The Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which requires all businesses producing more than 50kg of food waste per week to separate this from landfill waste by January 2014.

“By January 2016, any businesses producing more than just 5kg of food waste per week will need to recycle it.”

Keenan Recycling launched the commercial food waste collection scheme in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in 2010, becoming the first company in the North-east offering organisations the opportunity to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels.

The company also deals with tens of thousands of tonnes of food and green waste from local authorities across Scotland.

New clients in the north of Scotland include Gordon and Macphail in Elgin, the Rendezvouz Café and The Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness.

Craig Ewan, general manager from Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness, said: “We are very happy with the service and it is important for us to be seen to be green, just as important it is for us to buy local food and supporting local businesses. We have also used the compost in our extensive grounds.”

Finance director of Keenan Recycling, Gregor Keenan, added: “This expansion signifies a successful diversification for our company to venture into collecting waste further afield.

“It will help secure businesses for the future in terms of the new legislation which will be in place by January 2014, and we hope it will help businesses make a few simple changes to ensure they are legally compliant and on track with their environmental targets.”

Organic recycling firm Keenan Recycling, currently processes in excess of 50,000 tonnes of waste per year at the award winning £5m facility, collecting food waste from more than 500 businesses across the region.
