Media release: Teacher ‘over the moon’ to graduate ‘down under’

BIOLOGY teacher, Jess Power, has been awarded a Masters of Astronomy in Astrophysics from James Cook University based in Townsville, Queensland.

29 year-old Jess joined Robert Gordon’s College in 2006 when she relocated from Australia. Throughout the last three years she has studied part-time for her Masters.

Jess said: “After studying several star systems for my thesis I have grown a real interest in identifying exoplanets. I am very pleased to be graduating from this course which allows me to work across two sciences at Robert Gordon’s College.”

During the course, Jess was made Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society after a member read one of her papers.

“Going forward, I am looking to start my PhD next year in Astrophysics. I am hoping to study at a University in Scotland as there are some amazing programmes here and new research in my areas coming out of the UK,” adds Jess.

Stuart Farmer, head of Physics, commented: “Having Jess on board this school session is a valuable addition to the team. We are already using her skills within the S1, S2 and Intermediate 2 courses in Physics.”

Hugh Ouston, head of College added: “We congratulate Jess on this wonderful achievement where she has continued to build on her previous studies in Biology, IT and Secondary Education. The pupils benefit greatly from her learning as she takes this extensive knowledge back in to the classroom.”

Jess now holds a BSc in Biology and also IT, BEd in Secondary Education and now a Masters of Astronomy in Astrophysics.

Making the most of the changing world is a road to success both for individual pupils and for the school as a whole. Robert Gordon’s College will next year see the start of the development of a new Science and Technology Centre with state of the art teaching laboratories, which will enhance further the excellent quality of teaching in these crucial areas.
