THE Scottish Ambulance Service has donated a public accessible defibrillator to The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns as part of the British Heart Foundation Saving Lives In Glasgow Appeal to raise £100,000 to place 100 defibrillators in and around Glasgow.

A defibrillator is an apparatus for stopping fibrillation of the heart by application of an electric current to the chest wall or directly to the heart. The Avenue was chosen as an ideal location for a defibrillator because of its high footfall of regular shoppers.

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “We’re delighted to receive this donation of a public accessible defibrillator which will enable us to help save lives in Glasgow. Several centre staff have now undergone training to enable them to use the defibrillator in case of an emergency.”

Vanessa White, community defibrillation officer for the Scottish Ambulance Service, said: “The Avenue Shopping Centre was on our original list of locations we wished to place one of these defibrillators due to its high footfall. The defibrillator was donated by the Saving Lives in Glasgow appeal.”

The Avenue Shopping Centre, managed by commercial property consultancy BTWShiells, offers shoppers an alternative to sprawling trolley-dash shopping culture with a comprehensive range of outlets offering a warm and welcoming shopping experience conveniently located on the outskirts of Glasgow city centre.
