Media Release: Scotland gears up for major women’s cycling event

VP Cheshire

CYCLETTA, recognised as the UK’s only cycling series especially for women, has announced its first Scottish event will launch this autumn at Scone Palace in Perthshire on 15th September 2013.

Rapidly developing a name as Scotland’s cycling hotspot, Perthshire already plays host to a number of major cycling events including the UK’s biggest closed roads event, Etape Caledonia, and the annual Highland Perthshire Cycling Festival.

The Cycletta series has now seen thousands of women across the UK take to their bikes since it was founded in 2011, and this successful ladies only cycling series has announced seven stunning locations for its 2013 series, including its first in Scotland, starting from the iconic grounds of Scone Palace.

With the added incentive of raising vital funds for Official Charity Partner, Macmillan Cancer Support, and the backing of Olympian Victoria Pendleton (CBE), ladies across Scotland are being urged to get on their bikes at Cycletta Scotland, organised by mass participation events company Human Race. There’s never been a better reason to get on your bike.

Cycletta Scotland 2013 is open to women of all ages and abilities and includes different distances starting from just 20 km. This includes a Classic distance of 40 km and a Challenge distance of 52-82 km and, with the Olympics inspiring a whole wave of new cycling participants, Human Race, have added a new shorter 20 km distance at all venues continuing to develop the core motivation behind Cycletta: to make cycling participation accessible for as many women as possible.

Girls aged between 12 and 16 years-old can also take part when accompanied by an adult, opening the event up to as wide an audience as possible.

For the younger kids, Cycletta Scotland will also host a Scootathlon taking place on the same day. The Scootathlon is a mini fun triathlon for children between the ages of four and eight where they scoot, bike and run. Girls and boys will race together in various age categories, completing a 390m Scoot, 390m Bike and 250m Run.

Cycletta ambassador, Victoria Pendleton (CBE) will be aiming to take part in as many of the events as she can, and encourages women everywhere to give the events a go.

She said: “I’ve been involved with Cycletta since it launched with two events in 2011. I am so passionate about this series and it is fantastic to see Cycletta continue to grow in popularity, with events now taking place all over the country and launching in Scotland, where the scenery is fantastic and the welcome for cyclists warm and friendly.

“There are many reasons why women should get out on their bikes – whether it’s to commute to work, keep fit, socialise or to raise money for a good cause like Macmillan Cancer Support. Some cycling events can feel intimidating, particularly if you haven’t been on a bike for years and that’s exactly what Cycletta aims to change.”

Each Cycletta takes place in stunning surroundings, on safe well-managed roads and with loads of fun for all the family. Ladies are encouraged to bring the whole clan along to cheer them on.

Each event will feature all the unique touches that made the 2012 events so popular, like treat stops along the routes and the popular pamper zone offering ladies free post-ride pampering to make sure they leave looking as glam as when they arrived.

Ian Lulham, Macmillan’s cycling events programme manager, said: “We want as many ladies as possible to take to two wheels, get outdoors in the great Scottish countryside and take part in Cycletta for Macmillan in 2013.

“Not only will you have a great day out, but you’ll be helping us on our way to raising much needed funds to help support people affected by cancer, every step of the way.”

The Cycletta website offers a host of information on training, race day advice and bike maintenance.
