Media release: First primary school in Scotland to enter UK competition wins second place

PRIMARY six pupils at Robert Gordon’s College won second place in a marketing competition which was part of a national festival.

This is particularly impressive as the majority of participants were from secondary schools.

The Shakespeare Schools Festival is the UK’s largest youth drama festival allowing schools to perform in a professional theatre alongside each other.

In addition to the acting roles, pupils can get involved in the marketing project which provides an alternative learning opportunity for children looking for something a little bit different.

Mrs Elizabeth Rose, teacher of Drama said: “We entered The Shakespeare Schools Festival for the first time this year with the desire for our Primary Six pupils to experience Shakespeare’s works in a professional theatre setting.

“The performance day of the festival completely exceeded our expectations where we all had the most wonderful time.

“As we look back on the experience as a whole we are overwhelmed by the progress our children made: from the use of written language to the confidence in the spoken word.”

Team captain, Cameron Sword, commented: “We were very excited to be part of The Shakespeare Schools Festival. We all had a really good time learning about roles in a marketing team and enjoyed meeting children from other schools. It was great fun!”

Speaking about the first briefing session the marketing team had, Mrs Shelley Lee, press and communications officer, added: “The pupils arrived full of ideas and enthusiasm for how they could publicise the event, manage ticket sales and budgets whilst capturing the creative moments through photography.

“They naturally fell into roles which included a team captain, reporter, photographer and graphic designer.”

Mrs Claire Rae, teacher of Primary six, said: “The team worked very efficiently and professionally to advertise the festival.

“They thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills in advertising and marketing and used these new skills to produce an eye-catching book which summarised the marketing process.

“They are just delighted to have won second prize in this major competition and we are very proud of them.”

Talking about the support backstage at the festival, Miss Jenni Little, teacher of Primary six, commented: “One of the highlights at the festival was seeing our Junior children mixing backstage with secondary pupils from Aberdeenshire.

“The boys and girls talked about their experiences and provided constructive feedback on the project. The audience support was fantastic!”

Mrs Mollie Mennie, head of Junior School, added: “Marketing is such an integral part of any theatre production, and the judges were very impressed with the skills and talent of the pupils.

“The Primary Six pupils took striking images, showcased great ideas on communicating an understanding of Shakespeare to the whole school, created incredible storyboards and presented themselves and their project to a very high standard.”
