Media Release: Football player uses skills from the pitch to tackle working life

FROM playing against football legends such as Henrik Larsson and lifting the trophy after winning the First Division, to adapting to life in an office, may seem like a hard transition but for former Inverness Caley Thistle player, Roy McBain, it has been easy.

Roy has called full-time on his footballing career and has netted a new lease of life working full-time at Aberdeen based reprographics firm, North East Reprographics (NER).

Roy, who was born in Aberdeen, now plays part-time for Highland League team, Cove Rangers, and works Monday to Friday at NER as part of the managed print service support team.

As Roy’s first job in an office environment he did initially find the early mornings difficult but it has now become part of his daily routine.

Working in a core team of eight people in the support division has allowed Roy to take advantage of the skills he learnt on the football pitch.

Roy said: “I have definitely taken some of the skills into office life as it’s all about working as part of a team.

“On the football pitch, we had to work together in order to win the three points and in some respects it is the same at NER, as we are all working towards the same goal.”

Launched in 1995, NER, which supplies Xerox machines and services including printers and copiers throughout the UK and Europe, caters for hundreds of local businesses and global organisations.

Roy works in the support division of the Managed Print Service, which NER offers to clients.

This service, which can help to reduce 30 per cent of print and copy costs for businesses, is concerned with the monitoring of machines to ensure they are working at full potential.

As part of his role, Roy will complete regular site visits, replenish machines with consumables and paper and provide on-site support if required by users. He also assists on the helpdesk at NER.

Roy says: “I am really enjoying working at NER and as I am fresh to the working life, I am learning something new everyday. I like meeting and speaking to new people and if I can help them resolve any problems they are having that is even better.”

Roy is currently balancing his work with his football career at Cove, which includes training twice a week in the evenings and a Saturday game.

At first it was a struggle for Roy to train as hard when working nine to five but he is now in a routine that suits his lifestyle.

He says: “When I first started at NER, I thought I could train as hard as I was before but that soon became very tiring. I have managed to get myself in a routine and now my body is used to the dark mornings and evenings.”

He is still enjoying his football doesn’t have any plans to retire as of yet but working at NER has allowed him to pick up new skills for life after football, however football mad Roy says, as long as he is fit and healthy he will continue to play.
