Media Release: Theatreland hotel links up with autism awareness campaign

Holiday Inn Theatreland hotel, Glasgow

THE award-winning Holiday Inn Theatreland hotel in West Nile Street is to sponsor an event being hosted by a Glasgow mum to make the city more ‘autism aware’.

On Sunday 28 April, from 12-3pm, Maureen Rodger, assistant housekeeper at the popular city centre venue, will host her third annual free event, aimed at enabling families living with autism, to share information.

The idea for the event came about when, like so many faced with the life-changing news that her child was autistic, Maureen felt there was no central information service which could advise her on what to do next.

Maureen says: “Once you receive the diagnosis and a few website addresses, you are literally left to find out for yourself what services there are to help. Diagnosis of autism could be made a lot easier if there was a more centralised way of informing parents of where best to turn. The more information you have the easier it is to make the right choices for your child and your family.”

The event also celebrates the first anniversary of the launch of ‘Making Glasgow Autism Aware’, the Facebook page set by Maureen and her friends, which provides a forum for parents and carers to share useful ideas and information.

Helpful advice including where to find a supportive autism aware dentist, to finding social opportunities for young children with Asperger’s in Glasgow are among some of the shared information which can make living with autism much less challenging.

The Holiday Inn is delighted to once again play host to this worthwhile event and general manager, Alan Taylor, comments: “As a business, we are dedicated to helping local causes, and we are delighted that Maureen offered us the opportunity to sponsor this very worthwhile cause.

“She works tirelessly as an employee of the hotel but is equally dedicated to raising awareness of, and helping others deal with, autism, and she is a true inspiration to us all.’’

As well as free venue hire and complimentary tea and coffee, Holiday Inn Theatreland is also donating prizes for a raffle on the day, the proceeds from which will be given to local autism charities.
