Media Release: School leaver bags dream job

Jack Ryan

NORTH-east school leaver, Jack Ryan, has landed himself a dream job with Inverurie-based John Bell Pipeline.

Sixteen year-old Jack was counting down the days until he could leave school but as one of the younger pupils in his year, he had no choice but to wait until the Christmas holidays before he was allowed to leave.

It was during his last few weeks at Oldmeldrum Academy that, unbeknown to him, his PE teacher was in discussion with Rory Machray, assistant director at John Bell Pipeline.

Mr Machray explained: “We were looking to recruit a school leaver for an apprentice position where they would shadow and learn from our experienced personnel in our warehouse.

“I contacted Miss Watson at Oldmeldrum Academy to see whether she knew of any pupils who could fit the bill and Jack’s name came up as a perfect fit due to his mature outlook and ‘can-do’ attitude towards work.”

A hands-on, practical person, Jack excelled at both woodwork and metalwork at school and in his free time could often be found on his uncle’s farm helping to rebuild tractors and looking after the livestock.

“I was looking forward to leaving school and getting myself a job although I wasn’t sure where or what I wanted to do,” explained Jack.

“When I found out I had got the job at John Bell Pipeline I was really pleased as it gives me a real chance to learn as I go along and develop my practical skills.”

Recognising that young people are facing a tough time trying to break into the workplace, Brian Thomson, managing director commented: “At John Bell Pipeline, we are actively trying to give young local people a chance.

“In our previous experience of recruiting school leavers, this has proven to be a successful approach and our employees gain confidence and develop into more established roles with greater responsibility.”
