AN award-winning fish and chip shop is celebrating after reaching the finals of a prestigious industry award in two categories in recognition of its continued commitment to safeguarding the environment.

The Bay Fish and Chips of Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, is through to the finals of the Community Vote and the Sustainable Sourcing Category in the Footprint Awards.

The multi-award winning chippy was nominated for the Community Vote  Award and faced competition from more than 30 other outlets to make it as one of the 11 finalists.

Since being nominated, The Bay has been campaigning over the last few weeks to encourage votes from local residents, customers, suppliers, and followers on social media sites, which has all paid off.

The Footprint Awards celebrates the achievements of businesses in the foodservice industry for their commitment to safeguarding the environment.

The Community Vote Award gave the public a chance to nominate and vote for a their favourite sustainable restaurant or food outlet, whilst the Sustainable Sourcing Award highlighted the commitment The Bay has shown to sourcing its produce responsibly.

The Bay is a leader in promoting sustainability in the fish and chip industry and was the first fish and chip shop to receive the MSC chain of custody, giving them 100 per cent traceability of its North Sea haddock from sea to plate. T

he Bay is also amongst the most highly rated restaurants in the UK from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA).

The business has many green credentials including operating a zero-waste-to-landfill business, recycling all waste oil to bio diesel and all food waste, coffee granules and packaging to compost in turn closing the recycling loop.

Owner of The Bay, Calum Richardson, said: “I was over the moon to be nominated for this award and to make it as a finalist is a great feeling, it shows I truly have a lot of support. We want other businesses to follow in the footsteps and really make a commitment to looking after our environment for future generations.”

The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony on 23 May in London.
