Media Release: Health facility opens its doors

Dept of Diabetes, Centre for Health Science

MEMBERS of the public are being invited to find out what goes on at the Highland’s only Clinical Research Facility.

The state-of-the-art resource, which is based in the Centre for Health Science, Inverness, is having a free open day from 10am to 3pm on Monday 20 May.

The event is part of International Clinical Trials Day.

As well as having the opportunity to look around the facility and speak to staff about the work they do, visitors can take advantage of free basic health checks like having their risk factors for developing diabetes assessed.

There will also be the chance to win prizes, take part in a quiz and watch demonstrations about the work of research doctors and nurses.

You can also find out how you can contribute to medical advances by joining a volunteer register for clinical trials. Light refreshments will be provided.

Linda Birnie, manager of the Highland Clinical Research Facility, explains everyone is welcome: “I’d encourage anyone with an interest to come along to our open day. The event is ideal for people who may be interested in a career in health science, health care professionals who might want to use our facility for their own studies, people interested in volunteering for studies and anyone who is curious about the cutting edge work we do here.”

Professor Sandra MacRury, director of the Highland Clinical Research Facility, added: “The focus of the day will be highlighting the role of the facility in sustaining and growing academic and commercial activity, increasing research collaborations globally and the expansion of research within the greater Highland community.”

If you’re interested in going along, please contact Donna Patience on 01463 279560 or at Donna.Patience@uhi.ac.uk
