CAFE India, one of the oldest, best-known and popular eateries in Glasgow, is in the running for a prestigious national award.

The Merchant City restaurant, which prides itself on good quality food, welcoming atmosphere and innovative dining experience has been shortlisted for this year’s Scottish Restaurant Awards.

Originally situated on North Street in Charing Cross until it was destroyed by fire four years ago the restaurant, which was taken over by entrepreneur businessperson, Tony Hussain, in 2011, has risen from the ashes better than ever and settled into its new home in the City Centre.

Says a spokesperson: “Under the direction of Hussain, who was recently named Scottish Asian Businessman of the Year, the restaurant established in 1987 has gone out of its way to challenge the notion that Indian haute cuisine can only be created using age old recipes and ideas.

“The menus are constantly changing as customer tastes evolve and the experienced culinary team, under the leadership of executive chef, Bablu Roderick, and head chef, Rashid Ahmed, have tried to revolutionise the way Indian cooking is viewed in the UK.

“The kitchen staff continually push the boundaries in developing new recipes which have seen the restaurant garnish more than 15 national dining awards.”

Among the changes which sets Cafe India apart from many other Indian restaurants is the decision to make recipes and sauces as low fat as possible.

The spokesperson added: “The chefs do not use ‘Ghee’, which is high in fat, and chicken is steam cooked or grilled to ensure even the most popular dishes have a healthier twist.”

Tony Hussain said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the award of Best Indian restaurant in Scotland. The Scottish Restaurant Awards do a marvelous job in acknowledging the creativity, customer service and top quality that everyone in the industry across the country aspires too.

“The awards are even more special because the shortlists are made up of restaurants voted for by members of the public. Thousands of people have taken the time and trouble to vote. It is a great honour even to be nominated let alone to be included on the shortlist.”

The awards, which have been going for six years, are split into 12 categories and include recognition for Italian, Indian, oriental, seafood, rural and family friendly restaurants. There are also accolades for takeaway, bar food, best use of social media, sustainability and the prestigious chef and restaurant of the year titles.

The final winners of The Scottish Restaurant Awards 2013 in association with the Daily Record and 5pm.co.uk are due to be announced at a special awards ceremony presented by food critic, Tam Cowan, at the Ghillie Dhu on June 4.
