Media Release: PEEK celebrates Volunteer Week

PEEK (Possibilities East End Kids) will hold a special celebration dinner this Friday 7th June for our volunteers to help celebrate the national campaign which takes place on 1st-7th June which celebrates the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK.

The week focuses on saying ‘Thank You’ to the millions of volunteers who regularly contribute to society.

PEEK recognise the vital support of our young and adult volunteers and the hard work and commitment they donate every day to the organisation.

Volunteering provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience, improve in skills and confidence, whilst been able to help others along the way.

PEEK has seen many participants who have attended from a young age who go on to volunteer with PEEK and on some occasions become a member of staff, which just shows that volunteering is not just a rewarding experience that gives you the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, but can also help explore new fields and gain a real insight into your chosen career path.

Emma has been attending PEEK from a young age and was a talented member of the Children’s and, later Youth Theatre.

Aged 14, she began to volunteer and since then has supported a number of activities such as Street Play, Holiday Clubs, Singing Group and Youth Arts Group.

During her time with PEEK, Emma has herself been awarded a Bronze Arts Award and both Silver and Gold Youth Achievement.

She was also a key member of PEEK’s hugely successful Peer Education Project, Smile, You’re Beautiful. The group went on to win an Emma Humphries Memorial Award for raising awareness of violence against women.

Emma is now 17 and has just finished her first year of an International Baccalaureate at Red Cross Nordic College in Flekke, Norway.

She still keeps in touch with PEEK and helps out when she comes home on her holidays and her legacy continues with her 14 year-old brother, Ciaran, who has now been volunteering with PEEK since August last year as a Peer Educator and Active Champion!
