McFalls group

AYRSHIRE music lovers have a rare opportunity to experience the variety and emotion of ‘Baltic Passion’ when pioneering Scottish ensemble Mr McFall’s Chamber appear in concert at the Gaiety Theatre, Ayr on Saturday, June 15.

Formed in 1996 from a number of players from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Scottish Ballet, with a core ensemble comprising two violins, viola, cello and bass, Mr McFall’s Chamber delve into the fascinating and diverse musical culture of the Baltic States to explore its rich emotional landscapes and colourful mix of musical styles.

The concert features pieces from Estonian minimalist Arvo Pärt, with works by Lithuanian, Zita Bružaitė, and Estonian ex-prog-rocker, Erkki-Sven Tüür, a helping of music from Scandinavia and a haunting sextet arrangement of Sibelius’ Einsames Lied and Olli Mustonen’s fiery Toccata for piano and strings.

Renowned for their performances of tango music, McFall’s also explore the world of Finnish tango, joined by two tango musicians of international renown, violinist Cyril Garac and pianist Maria Martinova, for two classics of Finnish traditional tango, and Aulis Sallinen’s take on the Finnish tango tradition, Introduction and Tango Overture.

First performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011, Baltic Passion explores the music of this colourful and richly cross fertilised region and introduces audiences to a range of music they would otherwise not encounter.

The line-up for Saturday evening’s concert (7.30pm) features Cyril Garac and Robert McFall (violins), Brian Schiele (viola), Su-a Lee (cello), Rick Standley (double bass) and Maria Martinova (piano).

The group is unique among ensembles in Scotland, and much of the rest of the UK, offering concert-goers a genuinely different and exciting live experience.
