AN innovative North-east training centre is highlighting the importance that preparation for a modern apprenticeship plays in today’s working environment, and in the future, with the launch of its new entry to apprenticeship course.

Aberdeen based, ITCA, is one of the largest engineering apprenticeship-training firms in Scotland and has launched its new course, which offers the first step to a modern apprenticeship programme, funded by the national skills body, SDS (Skills Development Scotland) employability fund.

The new course, Entry to Apprenticeship or E2A course, which had a pilot  intake of two learners last month, is a workshop based course covering units in welding, fabrication and engineering.

The SQA Level 1 Performing Engineering Operations course includes a four-week work placement and is the first step towards a modern apprenticeship once in employment.

Andy Button and Stuart Green are the first learners to enroll on the course. Andy said: “I have learnt so much already and I am looking forward to the rest of the course. There is a great working environment in the workshop and the tutors have been great they are easy going and understanding.”

Stuart said: “I really enjoy the hands on experience as I find it gives us a chance to build on our workshop experience and skills which will provide us with a chance of employment in a highly competitive environment.”

Managing director of ITCA, June Jones, said: “The new course is built around our successful previous transition courses which will offer the learners a practical route to their apprenticeship and from there hopefully they will secure employment.

“The course involves a lot of practical experience working with the machinery, which helps provide the learners with real life on the job experience. It is vital that companies are investing in the future of their business through apprenticeships.”

ITCA has seen around 50 learners pass through their doors in the last 12 months on the previous transition course to an apprenticeship, which has seen a success rate of 92 per cent securing employment as a result.

The training centre currently has a completion success rate for modern apprenticeships higher than both the Scottish and national averages.

ITCA offers a range of bespoke courses.
