Media Release: Perth hosts national Fair Trade Festival

PERTH will be hosting a national Fair Trade Festival in celebration of Fair Trade Nation achievement this year. The Scottish Fair Trade Forum will be back in Perth this Saturday, 7 September, to celebrate this achievement in the city that witnessed the establishment of the national campaign in 2007.

The day is open to the public, is free and welcomes families and stalwart campaigners alike.

It will include child-friendly activities such as face painting, a treasure hunt, a bouncy castle and a kick-about with some Fairtrade footballs.

Schools will be giving presentations and performances about their Fair Trade activities throughout the year.

Gifts, clothes, foods, arts and crafts will be available to purchase on the day from a diverse group of traders from all over Scotland and beyond.

A Fairtrade wine tasting session will be held in the afternoon. Festival-goers can join in with a ‘linking hands’ photo project as well as contribute to the Festival Sculpture project.

Workshops and panel discussions organised for the day will cover issues like scandals in the supply chain and putting people before profit.

Producers and importers from Ethiopia, Indonesia and Mongolia will be joining discussions about the impact of Fair Trade on their communities.

A workshop on cotton will deliver insights into how the cotton trade has evolved and discuss some current controversies.

Forth Valley College, Scotland’s first Fairtrade college, will be premiering a film they have made about Scotland’s Fair Trade nation achievement.

The day will conclude with the announcement and presentation of Scotland’s first-ever Fair Trade Awards by Humza Yousaf MSP, Minister for External Affairs and International Development.

The awards will be honouring individuals or organisations in five categories: volunteer of the year, community award, campaigner of the year, innovation of the year and outstanding achievement.

The Forum is looking forward to welcoming everyone to what is shaping up to be an exciting and eventful day.
