COOK Gill, the co-founder of Cook & Indi’s World Buffet, has made a £7,000 donation to Mary’s Meals’ Sponsor a School Project in Malawi in memory of his daughter, Rebecca Gill.

The generous donation will be used to pay for the cost of building and equipping the shelter where the children are fed each day at Chivumbe School in the Blantyre district in the southern part of the country.

Gill said: “I’ve always wanted to help a children’s charity, if ever I found myself in a position where I was able to do so, and I’m delighted to help Mary’s Meals’ Sponsor a School Project to help it reach many more children with a life-changing nutritional daily meal in their schools.

“School feeding occurs in different areas in Malawi, with the biggest concentration of participating schools in the south.

“Mary’s Meals is a well-known entity in Malawi so when news gets out about feeding at a new school, enrolment numbers in schools increase dramatically.

“Not only that, but attainment figures improve across the board with teachers reporting significant improvement in concentration in lessons.”

The Sponsor A School initiative allows supporters to raise money to build and equip a new school kitchen shelter or to fundraise to cover the costs of providing Mary’s Meals for an entire school.

A number of supporters have chosen to remember a loved one by sponsoring a school in their memory.

Support through Sponsor A School is one of the reasons Mary’s Meals has been able to expand its school feeding in countries such as Malawi and Liberia.

Daniel Adams, head of fundraising at Mary’s Meals, said: “We are extremely grateful to Cook for helping us to reach more children with Mary’s Meals through our Sponsor A School project.

“Our work to feed the world’s poorest children in the most deprived countries every day they attend school would not be possible without the generosity of our supporters, who hail from all over the world.

“As a result of their kindness, the lives of thousands of the world’s poorest children are being transformed.”

Mary’s Meals sets up and runs school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest countries where poverty and hunger prevent children from getting an education.

Mary’s Meals currently feeds over 750,000 hungry children every school day in 16 different countries – 610,468 of these children are in Malawi, equating to over 20 per cent of primary age children.

The average cost for the charity to feed a child for a whole school year is just £10.70.
