Media Release: TV star encourages consumers to make the most of the whole roast


SCOTTISH TV personality, Carol Smillie, has launched a Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) campaign to encourage consumers to appreciate how to make the most of meat and take the strain off their shopping budget.

With 566,000 tonnes of food and drink thrown away from our homes every year in Scotland, Government research has found that people could save more than £400 a year, rising to over £600 for a family with children, if they better utilise the food they buy.

Food wastage also has an environmental impact with most discarded food ending up in landfill.

However, research by Wrap, the government-funded waste reduction organisation, and other organisations shows that most people’s major concern when it comes to food waste is wasted money.

In a bid to encourage consumers to make the most of their weekend roast and save some cash by using the leftovers, QMS has produced a new leaflet packed with recipes and advice including money saving recipes, such as curries and soups as well as top tips on the basics of cooking a roast.

“Food prices have rocketed over the past few years while incomes have stagnated,” said Jack Broussine, QMS marketing executive.

“This means that now, more than ever, shoppers need to get the most out of the food they buy.

“The benefit of buying high quality meat such as Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork is that there will be high-quality leftovers to use.

“With a little bit of forward planning, and our tasty recipes, shoppers can make their weekend roast go a whole lot further and get a lot more out of their shopping budget.”

Ms Smillie, a self-confessed ‘food enthusiast’, regularly cooks a roast for all the family to sit down and eat together.

“It is safe to say that the weekend roast is a staple meal in my family and of course there are always some leftovers which we can usually use for at least another couple of meals,” said Ms Smillie.

“Maybe it’s just the delicious taste of the meat itself, or the way it’s cooked, but sometimes I think it tastes better second time around!”
